On the rocks

I haven't done a Random ... theme post for a while now. So I decided to do one called Random on the rocks (no whiskey or brandy featured in this post though). On our recent visit to Cannon Rocks we had lots of time to explore the rock pools along the beach. I took all three of these within a short space of time around one of the rock pools.

For some reason I can't remember what these are called, but I am sure Zane will help me out.

Some kind of Coral

  1. Awesome photo's in this entry....I look forward to walking along the beach in Cape Town again...soon, oh so very sister lives on the beach in Melkbos!!

  2. Ooops - missed this post somehow. First photograph - barnacles I believe is what they are Jonker.

Second photo is of some form of tubular coral.

Third photograph is of black mussels. Black mussels along our coast have orange/red flesh inside and also have cream coloured flesh. I was once told that one can tell the males from the flesh colour - orange/red for male and cream for female. I post this for interest, and do not claim to be the expert. What I do know is that mussels freshly plucked and eaten from the rocks are delicious.

  3. Jonker, Limpets they are over here.
There looks to be a feast in the mussels.

  4. I am just catching up on visiting my favorite blogs, and I just looked over your last few posts. What WONDERFUL photographs. My goodness.

Barnacles have always fascinated me. My father used to feed cheddar cheese to the barnacles (oh, don't ask... *heh*) and the barnacles actually ate the cheese.

  5. i always think mussels like that look like treasure! wonderful picture!

  6. LOL! I will always have these picture in my head if someone asks for a drink "on the rocks!" :)
I like the one of the barnacles - they look like little tents!

  7. Gorgeous patterns and textures .. .and nicely cpatured, Jonker! some great inspiration for my upcoming trip to the coast!!
